Düren Site Wins Zero Hero Award for Sustainability

Topics: Sustainable Supply Chains Sustainability

Our logistics site in Düren has been awarded with the Zero Hero Award 2024, Arvato’s annual sustainability prize. The recognition comes with €5,000 in prize money, which the team will use to establish a “Green Corner”: an interactive space where employees and visitors can access real-time energy data, learn about ongoing projects, and contribute their own sustainability ideas via a digital InfoPoint.

Why Düren Won

A decisive factor was the commissioning of a new heat pump in 2024, which has significantly reduced emissions at the site. But the achievement is part of a much longer journey: for years, Düren has been investing in energy infrastructure to meet client expectations and align with ambitious climate targets.

Recent steps include the expansion of the photovoltaic system and the launch of a project in 2023, which enables smarter energy management. At the same time, the site is actively exploring alternative technologies, reducing heat loss, and ensuring compliance with ISO 50001 standards.

Sustainability in Düren goes far beyond energy efficiency. The site has introduced flower meadows, orchards, nesting boxes, insect hotels, improved waste management, and charging stations for e-cars and e-bikes — demonstrating a truly holistic approach.

“We are very pleased to receive this award. It was made possible through the great commitment of the employees in Düren, the support of several central units, and the strong backing from the Board. There are many people involved, and we would like to extend our sincere thanks to all of them”, explains Frank Appenzeller, site manager in Düren.

About the Zero Hero Award

The Zero Hero Award is presented annually to one of our logistics sites worldwide. It recognizes outstanding efforts to reduce energy use and emissions while driving innovative green projects. In addition to a rotating trophy, the winning site receives €5,000 to fund a local sustainability initiative.

A Global Tradition of Sustainability

The award has highlighted inspiring projects across the globe since its launch:

2023: Ontario (USA) – recognized for installing a large-scale solar array of 1,160 panels and engaging employees with creative sustainability events.

2022: Gennep (Netherlands) – honored for significant gas savings through heat pump systems, smart energy dashboards, and increasing usage of solar power.

2021: Hong Kong – the very first winner of the Zero Hero Award, celebrated for switching to renewable energy, installing PV systems, and introducing community-driven green initiatives.

Driving Change Together

The Düren team now proudly carries the Zero Hero trophy, continuing a tradition of innovation and commitment. By combining technological solutions with ecological measures, the site sets a benchmark for how we, as Arvato, are moving toward a more sustainable future.
